For English, please scroll down.
About Yoomp! for MSX turboR
I ported Yoomp!, originally released for Atari 8-bit computers, to the MSX turboR. https://yoomp.atari.pl/ This is an unofficial port, developed and released with permission from the original authors. I have always loved the original game’s unique gameplay, artwork, and sound, so I tried to preserve as much of that atmosphere as possible on the MSX turboR. AI was used throughout development. My role was mainly to guide it: deciding how to analyze the original game, how things should be implemented, and what needed to be fixed or changed. (It behaved quite well at first, but as development went on, it gradually became less willing to do what I told it to… which made things interesting.) Later in the project, Marcin, one of the original authors, also joined in and helped a great deal with optimization, especially around rendering and music processing. THX Marcin! You can also enjoy the game using the WebMSX browser-based emulator, without owning real hardware or installing an emulator. So please feel free to download it and give it a try! https://webmsx.org/
How This Project Started
I started working on this port while I was hospitalized for leukemia treatment. Once my condition had improved enough for me to think clearly again, I remembered Yoomp! from Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, which I had been playing at home, and suddenly really wanted to play it again. The problem was that I owned the Steam version, while the only machines I had brought with me to the hospital were a Mac mini and a Switch. Naturally, I didn’t have an Atari machine with me either. So I thought: “If I port it to MSX, maybe I can play it in WebMSX.” (Yes, buying the Switch version probably would have been easier. lol) I had also lost my job as a result of my treatment, and I wanted to gain some hands-on experience with AI-assisted development for whatever job I might take next. So at first, this project was partly just for fun. Before I knew it, it had turned into a fairly serious port. After leaving the hospital, I even bought a Panasonic FS-A1ST so I could test the game on real hardware. Since then, I have continued refining it with help from the original authors.
Distribution and Support
The game itself is completely free. I want as many MSX users as possible to be able to enjoy it, so there is no difference in the game whether or not you make a donation. That said, between AI usage fees and the cost of buying real hardware for development and testing, I ended up spending around US$1,300 on the project. Since I will not be able to return to work for a while yet and currently have no clear source of income, this is honestly a significant expense for me. If you play the game and think, “That was fun,” or “I’d like to support the project,” I would be very grateful for any optional donation. Of course, simply playing the game is already more than enough to make me happy. For my first AI-assisted development project to reach completion with the cooperation of one of the original authors was far more than I ever expected. I hope you enjoy Yoomp! on the MSX turboR as much as I do.
